How much attention do you pay to tire pressure as a motorcycle rider?
I hope, like me, you keep it topped up and check your tires each and every time you take your bike out.
If not, you’re leaving yourself open to all kinds of trouble….
For a car owner, low tire pressure is an annoyance. But for motorcyclists like us, it’s downright dangerous.
Even being a few PSI down can turn what should be a smooth corner into an
accident waiting to happen
.
And even if you avoid coming off your bike, you could end up stranded with a flat tire, waiting for a tow truck that’ll cost a fortune.
In a moment, I’m going to tell you about a
handy little gadget that’ll stop you from worrying about tire pressure ever again.
But first, let me tell you a
true story
about my own experience getting stranded with a flat tire…
Flat tire nightmare
Picture this: It’s a glorious summer day, and I was out on my bike, cruising the beautiful backroads of rural Colorado.
I’m enjoying myself! The sun is shining, the roads are smooth and inviting, and there’s barely another car or bike on the road.
But then I take a corner and realize right away
something’s wrong
. There’s a little wobble as I lean into the bend, that unnerving feeling of a slight loss of handling.
Thankfully, it’s not too severe, and I manage to brake and pull over safely. I’m already thinking this must be a tire problem, so they’re the first thing I check.
Front tire: fine.
Back tire: not fine at all. At first glance, it’s maybe a third deflated - which explains the wobble!
No help in sight
There’s no sign of a puncture, but after a few seconds, I realize the valve cap is missing.
I’m CERTAIN it was on when I set off. But did I screw it on tight enough the last time I put air in? I’m afraid I couldn’t tell you!
Whatever the cause, here’s the situation. I have a puncture repair kit, and I DO have a spare valve cap.
But what I DON’T have is any way to reinflate my tire
.
So I’m already thinking I’ll need a tow truck, and I’m resigned to this costing hundreds, maybe thousands.
I’m literally in the middle of nowhere. The closest town is maybe an hour’s drive. Getting a truck out here is not going to be cheap.
I pull out my phone. There isn’t a single bar of signal.
OK, so now what? Like I said, it was a glorious summer’s day. The sun’s beating down, and it must be 90 degrees or more.
Of course, I’ve got some water. But I don’t want to be stuck here for hours, slowly baking in the midday sun.
That’s the thing for us motorcyclists. Tire problems in a car? You can wait it out inside your vehicle until help arrives.
But on a bike?
There’s nowhere to hide
. If it’s hot, you’re gonna get hot. If it’s cold, you’ll freeze. If it rains, wet. You get the picture.
Help is at hand
Anyway, I waited for half an hour, considering what to do. Just as I’m considering ditching my bike and walking to the nearest town, I hear a car approaching. What a relief!
I flag it down, the guy gets out, and I explain my situation to him. I ask for a ride to wherever I can arrange a tow truck, but he smiles and says.
“I can do better than that! Give me a few minutes, and I reckon I can get you back on the road.”
I wasn’t sure what he meant, but then he opened his glove box and pulled out a device he called an “
Airmoto.” I’d never seen one of these before, so I asked him how it would help.
“Should be able to fix your tire issue. Let’s give it a shot.”
He connected it to my tire, and the gadget immediately told us the PSI was 21. Dangerously low - there was no way I could have kept on riding.
Honestly, I was skeptical. The
Airmoto device was no bigger than a water bottle.
Would this tiny machine really be able to inflate my bike’s tire?
Airmoto to the rescue
With one push of a button, the Airmoto started to inflate the tire. It ran quietly, but I could tell it was pumping air into the tire, which began to visibly inflate.
Within 5 minutes, it was done - my tire looked as good as new! He checked the pressure, and it was at a nice and healthy 39 PSI - exactly what it was rated for.
Obviously, I was extremely thankful. I even offered a $50 reward (since he’d saved me a lot of money), but he turned it down.
I did ask him one more favor, though - to tell me where he’d bought his
Airmoto!
I rode away on my good-as-new reinflated tire
. And as soon as I got home, I went straight to the official
Airmoto website and bought one for myself.
I now bring it with me every time I ride my bike. A few months after I got stranded, I got a slow puncture out on the road. This time, though, I was properly prepared -
Airmoto did its job and got me safely home.
What Is Airmoto?
Airmoto is an
easy-to-use, compact, and rechargeable air pump
.
Despite its small size, it’s super-powerful and can inflate a tire in minutes. Inside the device is an air hose, and it comes with multiple connectors that can be used to inflate all kinds of items.
When you connect it to a tire, you can also see the current pressure reading on
Airmoto’s LED screen – very useful indeed.
Step 1:
Press the power button and set the desired PSI.
Step 2:
To start
Airmoto, connect the hose to your tire and press the main button. It will immediately begin inflating your tire to the correct PSI.
Step 3:
Once the correct PSI is reached,
Airmoto will shut off automatically - no need to do it manually.
